Chasing a red and blacks total of 6-123 after Dean Turner hammered 72, Cavaliers got the runs just four wickets down to bounce back after a round one loss to this year’s competition favourites Cowra.
Hitting a crucial 45 at the top of the order, Cavaliers skipper Stu Middleton said early runs were important in his side’s pursuit of its first win of the Twenty20 season.
“It’s about getting off to a good start early, and any one of the top two or three, if they can do that then it relieves the middle order of a bit of pressure,” Middleton said, lifting his side to 1-72 before eventually falling victim to Centrals quick Zac Reimer (2-25).
"I think I was out there for about 10 overs, so it was a little slow for me.”
Middleton also praised his side’s work with the ball.
Aside from Turner’s big innings, no other Centrals batsman passed 13, with both Chris Hutchinson and Will Oldham reaching the devil’s number in a solid total.
Chris Martin’s 3-22 helped stemmed the flow of red and black runs from one end while Turner went hard.
Middleton said while under pressure to chase a reasonable Wade Park total, Cavs did well to sustain the pressure and lift to 4-126 in the 19th over.
“Centrals batted well I thought, but it was our bowling and our fielding that was able to peg them back a bit, which was nice,” he said.
"Any runs on the board always puts the pressure on the side batting second at Wade Park, batting under lights, it’s a bit difficult. First win of the season, it’s a good start for the boys.”
Despite not playing another Twenty20 clash until 2015 - Middleton’s men don’t play under lights at Wade Park again until Friday, January 23, against Molong - the maroons skipper said the six-wicket victory should kickstart his side’s season.
“I think so. We get a bit of a break from that format but one win, one loss, it’s not a bad start,” he said.
