Bendigo born and raised, Alexander Eastwood, 24, majored in neuroscience as part of his science degree at Melbourne University, and spent a year at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health researching autism and communication impairment.

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, traditionally a branch of biology.

"[Oxford] is a nexus of neuroscience," Mr Eastwood said.

"It's an honour to receive this prestigious scholarship and I hope my return on this investment is a lifelong contribution to the Australian community."

He has worked extensively with different conservation groups and was named Bendigo Young Citizen of the Year in 2010.

Governor Alex Chernov, who announced the award at Government House, said Mr Eastwood's academic and community work was "remarkable.

"He has devoted a considerable part of his life to community work, which was a key consideration," Mr Chernov said.

Described by his mother as a "self-made man", the 2008 dux of Bendigo's Catholic College said while he wanted a career in neuropsychiatry, he eventually wanted to teach.

"It's a passion of mine, education," he said.

Mr Eastwood will study a masters of neuroscience at Oxford next year.
