That’s the message Deadwood Rugby Club president Scott Podmore conveyed yesterday, saying his team is set to play some seriously expansive rugby.
Deadwood comes to Orange to take on a Central West Invitational side, and Podmore said part of his team’s goal is to make sure the predicted huge crowd is entertained.
“We aren’t here to see mauls, scrums, lineouts and long territorial rugby,” Podmore said.
“We’ll be throwing the ball around plenty, and making sure we play some entertaining rugby. After all, we aren’t playing for sheep stations so why not have some fun.”
Podmore conceded his side will be somewhat nervous leading into the game, considering the invitational side is all but unknown to his players. He went to admit his side will be confident, considering it boasts the likes of NSW Country Eagles Development Squad halves pairing Tom Duschesne and the wooly Mitch Walton, who has grown a stunning beard and mane for charity.
“We know of a couple that played in the (Australian) Barbarians team in Orange not long ago,” he said.
“But we never know if we’re coming into an ambush or not, so we are a bit (nervous).
“We’re pretty confident though.”
Today’s game kicks off at 3.30pm.
