A POLICE officer who drove under the influence of alcohol and assaulted another officer at the Orange police station will appeal her conviction despite being handed a good behaviour bond with no penalty.

Port Macquarie officer Kylie Anne Williams pleaded guilty to mid range drink-driving but pleaded not guilty to charges of resist arrest and assault police after an incident on March 24.
During the two day hearing, in Orange Local Court, magistrate Terry Lucas dismissed the charge of resist arrest but found Williams guilty of assault against a female custody officer with whom Williams studied, at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, in 2002.
The court heard Williams was stopped for a random breath analysis in Byng Street at about 10.30pm. She returned a blood-alcohol analysis of 0.102 and was arrested and taken to the police station where she assaulted the officer.
Williams had been a police officer for eight years and her barrister Brendan Greene told Mr Lucas she would be forced to leave the force after her conviction.
He asked the court to consider a good behaviour bond with no conviction as a punishment given her impeccable record.
The 38-year-old mother had completed the traffic offender’s program and until her drink-driving conviction she had nothing on her traffic record.
Mr Lucas said she had shown no contrition because she pleaded not guilty yet he gave her the bond because of her previous good behaviour.
“I would hate to think that it was anything other than a short lack of judgement,” Mr Lucas said.
