“I was surprised even to get nominated in that company,”he said.
Mr Simons said he hoped his passion for his job was obvious and was proud to see the reputation of Philip Shaw Wines continue to grow in the the two-and-a-half years he had worked there.
“It’s good to see all the hard work in the vineyard has paid off,” he said.
“Philip Shaw is an amazing company to work for and I’m grateful to work for the godfather of Australian wines.
“It’s a laid-back environment and we’re encouraged to experiment and be open to trying new things.”
Mr Simons said the success of Orange’s wine industry went hand-in-hand with the success of Orange’s top-class eateries.
“If wine does well, we all do well,” he said.
Philip Shaw Wines 2013 pinot noir No. 8 was also named the best pinot noir in this year’s awards.
Mr Simons said cellar door sales of the pinot were strong yesterday.
“As soon as people started asking about the award on the counter they started buying the pinot,” he said.
