Orange City Council will receive a little more that $3 million between November and the 2018-19 financial year.
Traffic committee chair Russell Turner said the council would divide this year’s $501,256 between 160 metres of Ploughmans Lane, which will be upgraded to the standard required when it becomes part of the southern feeder road, and re-opening the Huntley Road access to the Bloomfield precinct.
“It was pretty close to the mark,” Cr Turner said of the funding total compared to the council’s expectations.
“We had a rough indication of what it might be, which led to those two submissions.
“It’s a never-ending task and as the city grows, new spots need upgrading that might have been fine 20 years ago.”
Cr Turner believed the roads most in need of funding were Leeds Parade, leading to Charles Sturt University, and Ophir Road, between the Northern Distributor Road and the waste facility, but they were not in this year’s program.
“The traffic on Ophir Road has virtually doubled because the rubbish comes in and goes out as recycled material,” he said.
However, he said he looked forward to seeing work at the intersection of Forest and Huntley roads start, with the council seeking tenders this week - tenders will close in three weeks’ time.
“That will be a big boost to the safety of that section of road,” he said.
Member for Calare John Cobb said the electorate’s councils would receive more than $30 million during the next five years.
“This is great news for our regional community who rely heavily on the local road network on a daily basis,” he said.
“These funds, coming directly from the federal government to councils, will make a real difference in building roads, repairing streets and creating better access across our region.”
