The pilot episode of the superhero backstory was downloaded via torrent networks worldwide 1.33 million times between September 17 and 29, according to Variety, which said the figure was more than five times any other freshman US TV series this season.
It was also reported that 600,000 of those downloads came one day after the season premiere.
Even in Australia, the Nine Network, which is set to screen Gotham, has moved its premiere date forward to take advantage of the buzz being generated across the world. (Note: It's not illegal to download copyright infringing material in Australia.)
No air date has been announced but a Nine spokesperson said the series will be "fast-tracked to air this month".
Netflix, which secured exclusive rights to stream the show worldwide, including Australia, will no doubt be keeping an eye on illegal downloads and hyper-interest in the show.
The company has reportedly said in the past that it uses piracy statistics when choosing content to license.
Gotham tells the original story behind Commissioner James Gordon's rise in Gotham City, prior to the arrival of Batman.
Developed by Bruno Heller, the crime series is based on characters published by DC Comics in the Batman Franchise.
It stars Ben McKenzie as Commissioner Gordon, also known for his role as Ryan Atwood on Fox's The OC, alongside Donal Logue and Jada Pinkett Smith.
