Held at the Orange City Bowling Club, CYMS honoured their best and having starred at a divisional level again in 2014, Bassmann was the obvious choice as the green and golds’ most valuable in an otherwise disappointing campaign that resulted in the Mick Sullivan-led outfit missing the finals for the first time since 2009.
Honoured to be the recipient of this year’s CYMS MVP, the 25-year-old said the hurt associated with missing this year’s Group 10 finals series would spur on the club to fire in 2015.
“I think so. To be in four grand finals and then not make the semis, it hurt a lot of the boys,” said Bassmann, who is signed on to be part of the club’s resurgence next winter.
“It was good to see first division win the comp though.
“If you looked at their team on paper, they were easily the best team all year.”
Bassmann shifted between fullback and centre for the majority of the year for his club, but it was in the No.1 jersey at a representative level the CYMS junior shone.
And that’s where he’d again like to play for CYMS.
“I enjoyed playing centres, but there’s too much tackling ... especially defending outside Mick,” he laughed.
Bassmann also shared the coach’s award with Ben Gosper.
In other premier league awards, prop Zac Bohan and back-rower Kyran Bubb shared the best and fairest award, while Riley Law was voted peerless in the players’ player count and in his debut year in the top grade Zac Rue won the side’s most improved.
Awarded to the member with club pride and passion, Law also took home the Dezi award.
Jarrod Robbins won the club’s rookie of the year gong, Mick Downey was crowned clubman of the year, Ben Gosper rewarded for his tireless efforts at lock with the most consistent player trophy while the junior clubman of the year was Craig Piper.
The Des Morrissey perpetual was won by Kiel Vardanega.
The bullocking prop who had his season cut short by a career-ending injury also won the premiership-winning first division best and fairest award.
Adam Gibson was the side’s players’ player and Daniel Stedman (most improved) and Rue (coach’s award) also took home trophies following a stellar campaign by CYMS’ first division outfit throughout 2014.
Ryan Griffin was CYMS under 18s’ best player this season and was rewarded with the side’s best and fairest award, while Blake Hutchinson topped the players’ player voting, Joe Duffy won the coaches award and David Stelling and Jack Nagle shared the most improved award.
In the women’s league tag side, Tori Moore capped her Group 10 best and fairest award with the same club honour, while Sam O’Neill-Baker (players’ player), Courtney Lamb (coach’s award) and Sam Laing (most improved) shone in another strong season for CYMS.
