Following the three-leg running and cycling event was the club’s annual breaking of the ice, where present athletes take to the water to officially declare the season open.
“I don’t think anyone would dare put a thermometer in there to be honest,” OCTC’s new president Michael Lockyer said, adding the results of yesterday’s events weren’t the main aspect of the day.
“Brisk is the word I’ll use.”
Lockyer took over the top job just days ago, and marvelled at the club’s strength before heaping praise on its previous president, Steve Martin.
“There is such an amazing foundation here already,” Lockyer said.
“Steve stepped down at our annual general meeting and no one got elected. Eventually I stuck my hand up, but the other guys have been working toward this for years. I’m lucky to come in now.”
The club continues to go from strength to strength, boasting 150 members, over two thirds of which where present yesterday.
“It was an unbelievable turnout today, there would’ve been at least 30 midgets and 30 juniors too,” Lockyer said.
“Combined with the seniors there was, conservatively, 120 competitors here today.”
With such strength and his club’s recent record, Lockyer said OCTC has a certain right to favouritism ahead of the 2014-15 Inter-Club series.
“We’re holding another duathlon in a month to stay fit,” he said.
“Then in November we start swimming before our first race, which is actually here. We open up the series and hopefully we can get our fifth in a row.”
