The school holiday program is part of Greater Western Sydney Giants’ central west development program, and is the first holiday camp of its kind that has been held in the central west.
Central West development co-ordinator Matthew Johnson said the camp will act as the base of programs the Giants are looking to build in the region in the future.
“We want to grow the game in the region, and with a NSW team in the grand final this weekend, we hope to slowly build a base for it. It’s about making kids aware of the game,” Mr Johnson said.
Development officers Matt Griffin and Lachlan Kenney ran the primary school children through drills and modified versions of the game, and Mr Johnson said he hoped the kids at the camp who had never played the game before would take it up next season.
“AFL is a tool to get kids outdoors in the sunshine, running around, instead of sitting at home playing video games during the school holidays,” Mr Johnson said.
