As part of a membership drive to get younger people to join the society, they are offering a free ice cream or popcorn for everybody under 30 who attends the session at 5pm on Sunday.
Every month the society choses an independent, art house or foreign film to screen at the Odeon 5 Cinemas, and for September it has chosen the South Korean-American sci-fi film.
Set in the future, Snowpiercer, rated MA15+, follows the story of a group of people who travel around the world on a train after a massive environmental catastrophe renders Earth unliveable.
Mr Young, a self-professed movie buff, said it was an enthralling film that makes you think.
“I saw it at the Sydney Film Festival earlier this year and it would have to be one of my favourites of the year, and that’s saying a lot, considering I’ve seen around 200 movies [this year],” Mr Young said.
He said the film was an unusual choice for the society, whose membership usually supports classic art house but was looking to broaden its scope in terms of genre.
“The film society caters for movie lovers of all ages. It would be great to get the younger and the older demographics together,” Mr Young said.
“We want to show less-traditional arthouse films and one of the big events we’ve got coming up is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters, with a costume competition and things like that. That’s definitely something we’ve never done before.
“Young people should like good films and they do, and that’s what it’s all about.”
