ISAA CONFERENCE
The Independent Scholars Association of Australia (commonly referred to as ISAA) is holding its annual conference at the National Library of Australia on October 9 and 10. The theme is The Lucky Country 50 Years On, referring to the late Donald Horne's now classic book first published in 1964 and, in a series of revisions, never out of print since. Cost: ISAA members $100, Non-members $110, cost includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Conference dinner $45. Day registrations are available. CONGRATULATIONS
A book about a group of Australian beetles was the joint winner of the 2014 Whitley Award by the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales. Australian Longhorn Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Volume 1: Introduction and Subfamily Lamiinae, jointly published by the Australian Biological Resources Study, part of the Department of the Environment, and CSIRO Publishing, was written by Dr Adam Slipinski and Dr Hermes Escalona from the CSIRO Australian National Insect Collection in Canberra.

POETRY PRIZE
Australian Book Review welcomes entries in the 11th Peter Porter Prize, which is now worth a total of $7500 and is open until 15 December 2014. Poems must not exceed 75 lines and must be written in English. More information: australianbookreview.com.au

Tuesday, 6 for 6.30pm: At Paperchain Bookstore Manuka, Alex Sloan of ABC Radio 666 will introduce the launch of Ducks on the Pond: Sue Mackinnon: A Chosen Life by Canberra writer Sally Milner.
