The team of year 5 and 6 students will be travelling to Melbourne on Saturday, October 18 to compete against other finalists in a series of problem-solving challenges.
The students will be tasked to use innovative thinking to solve a number of open-ended problems in the disciplines of language literature, applied technology, maths engineering and social sciences.
Tournament Of Minds teacher Annabel Hughes-Clapp described the competition as using out of the box thinking and presenting it through acting.
“Only eight teams from NSW were selected to go through to the finals and this is the first time that Orange Public School has been chosen,” she said.
In the finals students Amber Shilling, Emily L’Estrange, Madeleine Owens, Darcy Climpson, Ethan Delaney, Cezar Dihel and Kate Burdack will be asked to complete a long-term challenge which they will have just three hours to brainstorm and prepare, along with a spontaneous challenge.
“We will be given problems and we have to work together to find creative solutions to them,” student Amber Shilling said.
The Australasian Pacific finals will run for three days and the children are looking for the money to pay for the trip.
“The expenses are estimated to be $600 for each child,” Ms Hughes-Clapp said.
“It’s a huge expense but it’s also a big deal for Orange Public School and if the students win then there is the possibility of getting to perform overseas.”
Ms Hughes-Clapp and teacher Luke Tosevic are asking for sponsors to contact Orange Public School staff to help fund the expenses of the competition.
