The zone’s academy girls outfit will play from 12pm on Saturday before backing up at 10am on Sunday, both days against Penrith at Riawena Oval, in a bid to pick the best possible side for the upcoming girls’ country championship this summer.
And this weekend’s girls’ trial game isn’t the only cricket action at Riawena Oval this pre-season.
With the official start date of the Orange District Cricket Association October 11, Western Zone will be playing trial games in Orange on September 23 and again on September 24 for its academy boys’ outfit as well.
The boys will play Penrith Green Shield next Tuesday before backing up and taking on St George Green Shield in the annual Brian Booth Trophy the next day.
Mitchell Cricket Council honorary secretary Carl Sharpe said the next week of cricket was huge for Western Zone.
“They’re both big games for the teams,” Sharpe said.
“We’ve had a squad of about 21 boys training at Kinross once or twice a month now and after these games we’ve got to come up with a Western Zone side to take part in the 17s state carnival.
“They’re two pretty important games for them.
“And it’s been the same for the girls. They’ve been training hard and a side will be picked for their championship as well.”
Added history for the boys next week, Western Zone and Penrith will play off for the Stuart Webster Trophy while, against St George, Western plays for the Brian Booth Trophy, an annual match that’s been running for the last 18 years.
Both Webster and Booth will be on hand to present the winners with their respective trophies.
