WITH just a day to go until the elections for mayor and deputy mayor, another candidate has thrown his hat in the ring.
Incumbent John Davis and councillor Jeff Whitton will compete for the mayoral vote at Tuesday night’s extraordinary meeting, but councillor Jason Hamling will stand against incumbent Chris Gryllis and councillor Scott Munro for the deputy’s position.
Cr Hamling, who previously spent a year as deputy mayor, said he felt it was his time.
“Last time, I stepped down [at the end of the term] to give other people a go,” he said.
“This is my 10th year at council and I would really love to have another go. The other councillors can vote for me on what I’ve done and what I may be able to do, and if I’m not selected, I’ll still work hard.”
Despite serving a previous term as mayor and tipped to run again this year, councillor Reg Kidd said he would not have another tilt at the top job on Tuesday.
Cr Kidd said he expected to be travelling between Orange and Sydney regularly and family matters required his attention.
“But watch out next year,” he said.
Councillor Kevin Duffy said he would consider running for deputy mayor, but there would be “a lot of water under the bridge” before the vote on Tuesday and councillors were still in discussions.
Councillor Russell Turner, a past mayoral candidate, could not be reached for comment.
The vote will take place on September 9 at the Orange City Council chambers from 7pm.
Councillors will also allocate committee membership at the meeting.
