WITH the ongoing media influence, it’s very easy to fall into the “labelling trap”, especially when it comes to our perceptions of refugees and Muslims.

The recent, horrific events involving violent extremists in the Middle East have shocked us all, including Muslims living in Australia.
As the secretary of the Australian National Imams Council stated in the Sydney Morning Herald (August 23): “We do not condone such actions. As a Muslim, it’s not acceptable; as an Australian it’s not acceptable; as a human being it’s not acceptable - in all dimensions it’s not acceptable.”
It’s worth noting that the word jihad in Islam means “striving for a good cause”.
In my opinion, it’s a great pity that most of us know very little about the beliefs of Muslims, and their contributions to many Australian communities.
PS: Parts of the media and some politicians certainly have a lot to answer for when it comes to demonising refugees and Muslims. I won’t comment on Tony Abbott’s recent comments regarding “one country, one team”.
