CANOBOLAS Rural Technology High School students connected with their inner rhythm during a drumming workshop at the school on Tuesday.
Twenty students from years 7 to 11 practiced simple drumming patterns and learned longer pieces ahead of performances the Global Drumming Community Workshop on Thursday and Cultural Festivity Day on September 7, both part of the Orange Youth Arts Festival.
Drummer Rosco Welch, who regularly holds Fun With Drums workshops, used word phrases to teach the keen students drum sequences and also encouraged teamwork and shared leadership amongst them.
“What I’m hoping is they’re going away thinking they’ve got rhythm and that they can play drums, because that’s what it’s all about,” he said.
“You don’t have to be a genius to do the sort of thing I do.
“It’s all about having fun and connecting with your inner rhythm.”
Music teacher Lauren Aldrick said she was happy to see so many students give the workshop a go.
“This is something easy as a starting point and hopefully they’ll get involved with other music groups after this,” she said.
“It’s a new experience for them and I hope it helps them with their experience and teamwork, especially as they’re all from other classes.”
