Clancy’s classmates Samantha Haigh and Fenella Jamieson were also named Year 10 finalists in the annual student design competition, in which students had to create an outfit inspired by the past five decades and incorporate at least 80 per cent merino wool.
The classroom competition run by Australian Wool Innovation celebrated 50 years of the Woolmark brand and received 10,000 registrations from students in year seven to 11 across Australia.
Clancy’s outfit is an autumn-style tight-fitting dress with puffed, loose sleeves, a cape and leg warmers in rustic orange-browns, reds and contrasting light blues, and shows her appreciation of 1960’s British model and style icon Twiggy.
“I liked how she inspired fashion and her vintage style,” Clancy said.
“I get to go to Sydney and see the designer [Jonathan Ward] make my outfit, and meet him. I also get $2500 and the design gets put in Girlfriend magazine.”
Fenella and Samantha also drew inspiration from the 1960s, but Samantha noted “everyone did completely different stuff, even though we all did the same era.”
Fenella’s outfit featured a bold cat design inspired by Andy Warhol, and Samantha chose the quirky space-age trend that obsessed many designers in the 60s.
All three worked hard on their designs for nine weeks in term one. The designs were also used as an assessment for their textiles class.
Clancy said she would like to enter the fashion industry after school, adding “I like that sort of creative stuff”.
