The elimination semi-final at Ashwood Park was anyone's for the taking with a score of 15-5 at half-time but the Emus ran in five tries to none over the second half to see off the students with ease.

Emus now face Bathurst Bulldogs who went down to the Dubbo Kangaroos in their qualifying semi a day earlier.

The students had the best of the early opportunities as the Emus struggled to clear the ball out of their own half.

Emus rarely got into the Bathurst half but when they did they always made it count.

David Faul's penalty goal was the first impact on the scoreboard before Feleti Fosio scored a try to take the lead out to 10-0.

CSU earned a scrum close to Emus' own 22m line and Jarrod Hyde caught the Orange defence unaware as he rushed to the blind side to score.

The possession for the students didn't end there, as they were keen to throw the ball around but lost it on several occasions close to the line.

After spending so long in the Emus’ territory with nothing to show for it, the Bathurst side were punished by Orange's Ben Ruddy who went over in the corner to make it 15-5.

The second half was a slaughter.

Scintillating front-rower Matt Findlay made sure he got his name on the score sheet for his birthday when he added three points from close range.

Chris Bailey went over from close range before Tom Fenualelei stole a CSU lineout in their own half and scored just several phases later, taking the score to 28-5.

Fenualelei got his second when the CSU right-side defence was caught overlapped.

Keith Howarth and Scott Bouffler made it six different try-scorers for the Emus as their scoring spree couldn't be stopped by a tiring CSU defence.

The students enjoyed some ball close to full-time but couldn't convert as the club's involvement in this year's finals came to an end, with their third grade side also losing.

For Emus, Ben Ruddy said the game wasn’t as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.

“It wasn’t until the end of the second half that we ran away with it,” Ruddy explained.

“CSU came fired up. We didn’t stick to our patterns in the first 20 minutes and we couldn’t get out of our half.

“They were giving it to us in the scrum.

“It took us a bit to get into it.”

The inside centre said there were two main things his side could take from the win.

“Our structure - in the second half we went back to our patterns and showed they work,” he said.

“And we’ve got to turn up to play.”

That will be exactly the case this Sunday when the Emus take on Bathurst Bulldogs in the minor semi-final at Endeavour Oval.

“It will be a lot more physical which means we need to get a good start and play for the full 70 (minutes),” Ruddy said.

“We’ll have to work a bit harder.”

CSU captain Gus Flannery expressed his disappointment at yesterday’s loss.

"It was silly mistakes and penalties that got to us in the end. It was discipline that we didn't keep on top of,” Flannery said.

“I wish we could have held it together. I felt in terms of where we are now our set play and structure is a lot better than early on in the season. Our lineouts and scrums we held our own, especially in that first half."
