Firefighters were notified of the fire by a member of the public and extinguished it using a dry chemical extinguisher.
Orange station officer Neil Hughes said several sparks flew from the electricity box before it erupted into fire and was extinguished.
“It went off like a skyrocket, with a bang,” Mr Hughes said.
Essential Energy is investigating the cause of the fire.
Essential Energy south eastern regional manager Phillip Green said the fire interrupted the power supply to 68 customers in Kite and Clinton streets.
“Local crews ensured that the area was safe, and began reconfiguring the electricity network to progressively restore power to affected customers,” he said.
“Repairs to the pillar box will be carried out over the coming days.”
Mr Hughes reminded people not to attempt to extinguish electricity boxes themselves.
