SIX Year 8 and 9 hospitality students at Canobolas Rural Technology High School had a valuable opportunity to learn the basics of French cooking from a member of Orange’s French community on Wednesday.

Chris Derrez, a winemaker by trade who has lived in Orange for 12 years, volunteered his time to teach students how to make boeuf bourguignon, a traditional French beef stew from his home region of Burgundy, and also answer any questions they had about France.

“I’m answering any questions they have about French cooking, about France and the language,” Mr Derrez said.

“[Some of the questions they’ve asked are] how to say I love you, if we eat three times a day.”

The Global Kitchen workshop is the first event organised by the newly-formed Orange Culture Hub, a community group that was formed to bring all the cultures of Orange together.

It was also one of first events in the lead-up to the inaugural Orange Youth Arts Festival, which begins on September 1, and has a week-long program of educational and mentoring workshop for school students.

Chairperson of the Orange Culture Hub Grace Pereira said she was very grateful to the French community for their involvement in the workshop.

“I hope it’s a nice experience for the kids, especially if they are thinking about travelling overseas to France.”
