While I agree with some comments I feel that the CWD has overreacted with their conclusions on the fuel tax.
The article was more to do with an attack on Joe Hockey than it was about facts.
I must admit my conclusions did come from the office of John Cobb after asking for some facts, as the CWD, as well as other newspapers, all failed to disclose the cost of the fuel tax per individual or per tank of fuel.
The media, instead, chose to use figures for the whole nation, which of course look bad at a billion-plus dollars.
This money will supposedly be used for road infrastructure, which is something we all agree needs a great deal of work. It reminds me of the 3x3 fuel tax we had years ago, where we paid an extra 3 cents per litre, supposedly to fix our roads.
According to information I received from John Cobb’s office the fuel tax will add “only around 40 cents a week more” per tank, based on using 50 litres per week. Or 1.25 cents per litre.
Much less than weekly fluctuations in fuel costs in some areas, and certainly much less than the often 10c per litre more we pay in Orange compared with the likes of Sydney.
