Ms Mackellar will be in Orange, Bathurst and Cowra on a three-day tour of the region starting at Orange City Library on Tuesday, September 2, and with significant references to Orange and the central west in both memoirs How To Get There and When It Rains, touring this region was a no-brainer.
“When my publicist suggested a tour, I jumped at the chance and I thought what better place than Orange. I can’t wait to get back there,” Ms Mackellar said, now a resident on the east coast of Tasmania.
Her second memoir, How To Get There, is about Ms Mackellar leaving Orange nearly three years ago and explores learning to love again after living through grief, and the complexities of doing this in a community with which she is unfamiliar, with two young children.
She reflects on love after grief, juggling being a mother and negotiating a burgeoning relationship, the rhythms of country life, displacement and the writing life.
“The book’s essentially about leaving home in Orange, and I will always class Orange as home. I have an affinity with the people and the landscape. I love it there. It was almost dislocating to leave in some ways,” she added.
“I’ve always wanted to write a novel but this just pushed itself to the front. It demanded to be written.”
Ms Mackellar will be at the Orange City Library on Tuesday, September 2, from 12.30pm.
She’ll then be at Cowra Library on Wednesday, September 3, also from 12.30pm.
