The magistrate, Bruce Williams, handed down the sentence on Thursday in Orange Local Court after the Lords Place resident was caught with eight bags of crystal meth, which he claimed was for personal use. 

But as soon as the sentence was handed down, Goodwin lodged an appeal against the severity of the sentence and was granted bail until his appeal was heard in the District Court. 

He was apprehended when police parked outside a suspected drug dealer’s house at 1.45pm on Friday, March 3 and watched a car leave the premises, in which Goodwin was a passenger.

Police pulled the car over and the pair were visibly nervous.

Goodwin was “shuffling” in his seat and his breathing was shallow, and the driver was shaking and sweating despite it being a mild day. 

Suspicious of the men’s behaviour and armed with intelligence reports, officers conducted a search of the car and the pair. 

Goodwin had an iPad mini cover with $2400 in cash inside, which he said had been won on a poker machine. 

Officers checked his underpants and hidden inside was a container that had inside of it six small bags and two medium bags of ice, or methamphetamine. 

Each smaller bag was separated into 0.1 grams of  ice, which is called a “point deal” and is the most common way to sell methamphetamine, police facts said. 

The smaller medium-sized bag had 0.3 grams of ice in it and the larger had 1.5 grams. 

Goodwin told police the drugs were for personal use and he injected about one gram per day.

The estimated street value of the drugs was $2400. 

Goodwin had an extensive criminal history, which included drink-driving, break and enter, assault, assault police, resisting arrest and being armed with a weapon to commit an offence.
