The hockey star was thrilled to win the junior prize after a stellar year with hockey stick in hand in 2013.
“I’m absolutely stoked,” Smith said of her award.
“I had a good year last year, obviously winning nationals, making the 21s squad for this year, going away for Futures Camp and then playing a Test match for Australia. So it was a good year.”
Smith was part of the Western Combined High Schools (CHS) and NSW CHS teams, and was selected in the NSW All Schools merit side.
She was part of the Hockey NSW team which won the Australian under 18s women’s championship, and from this was selected in the Australian Futures Squad to attend an intensive training camp.
During the camp she was selected to play a Test match against Japan’s under 18s national team.
She was selected in the 2014 NSW under 21s women’s squad.
She also toured New Zealand and Argentina as part of the under 16s Australian All Schools girls’ hockey team.
The 18-year-old is recovering from a calf injury but is working to be ready for the Australian Super Camp to be held later this year.
