Orange BMX Club members hope to have their new Anzac Park BMX track up and running by Christmas, with club president Allison Rogers hopeful competition racing will begin early in January, 2015.
Mrs Rogers said construction had hit a standstill with the recent wet weather, but the club members were excited about the prospect of completing the track by the end of the year.
“Most of the dirt has already been moved to the site but it’s been too wet to do anything with. As soon as it dries off a little bit we’ll get the machinery on there and the course will be shaped,” she said.
“We hope to have everything up and running by the Christmas school holidays and start competition in January. We need to have BMX NSW sign off on the course and as soon as that happens and the track is safe to use we’ll be using it for competitions.
“It’s going to be absolutely amazing. Riders from all over the state are eagerly awaiting the track opening and can’t wait to come and ride in Orange.”
Mrs Rogers believes the track will provide access to a fast-growing activity for the region’s youth and promote community participation and development.
It was sentiment shared by Learne Spicer, who has driven past the bare, un-used site every day for the past 14 years. She believes this upgrade will allow the club to expand on important programs, including their work with people with a disability.
“The Orange BMX Club currently has disabled club members and have recently partnered with Communities NSW Sport and Recreation to facilitate a cycling related Disability Sport Program which provides opportunities for people with a disability to participate in cycling,” she said.
“The upgrade of the BMX track will enable the club to continue and expand this program.”
In order to help with the cost of these upgrades, Mrs Spicer has organised a community fundraising, adults-only disco at Orange Ex-Services’ Club on August 2.
Tickets for the disco are $25 each and available from the Orange Ex-Services’ Club.
People are encouraged to come along dressed as their favourite artist.
