Several people have used Facebook to caution householders to “be careful” of the phony collectors.
However according to Cancer Council community engagement manager Justin Cantelo there is no need to be alarmed.
“This week we do have a team working in the region, this is not a scam,” Mr Cantelo said.
Mr Cantelo said collectors would be wearing Cancer Council uniforms and would not be collecting cash donations but rather taking bank account or credit card details.
“They shouldn’t be pushy in any way, they shouldn’t be using high-pressure sales tactics,” Mr Cantelo said.
Mr Cantelo said the collectors, who were co-ordinated by the Cancer Council management in Sydney, were working from 11am till 8pm, in accordance with the Australian Competition and Consumer Act’s rules on charity fundraising.
“We are targeting people with jobs so that’s why they work then,” Mr Cantelo said.
Mr Cantelo said this wasn’t the first time Orange residents had raised concerns about the legitimacy of collectors due to their working hours.
