They spoke for thousands of Calare voters based on the CWD’s online polls showing nearly 50 per cent of respondents were opposed to his government’s policy. We add our voices to this call for change so that Mr Cobb might be more aware of the views of his constituents.
We call on the government to show compassion and understanding of the desperate circumstances of persons fleeing countries where they have undergone persecution, abuse and extreme civil conflict, and where there is no such thing as a diplomatic queue to be joined.
We call on the government to accept asylum seekers as required by international law, irrespective of how they might have arrived in our waters or on our shores, and to process them within Australia.
And we call on the government to increase the number of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers that are accepted into our country, recognising that we have the capacity and resources to provide them with the opportunity to make valuable and worthwhile contributions to our economic and social development.
To Mr Cobb we say, you were elected to represent all your constituents and, even though you disagree with our views, we ask that you acknowledge the significant number of people not only in Calare but throughout Australia who are strongly opposed to the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers.
