Spokesman Dale Jones said council had a duty of care to try to ensure the safety of all users of the Mount Canobolas precinct, including motorists and pedestrians.
“The boom gates have been closed as a precaution to help ensure motorists are not at risk of an accident or being stranded on the mountain overnight,” he said.
The access roads will be closed indefinitely until conditions are considered safe for vehicles to use.
Mr Jones said council’s priority was the safety of road users.
“Council staff will continue to inspect the roads on a regular basis in an effort to re-open them as soon as possible,” he said.
“Council will endeavour to ensure the roads are open should conditions allow it, however if snow or ice make conditions dangerous, the boom gates on the access roads will remain closed.”
Mr Jones reminded drivers it is an offence to drive past a road-closed sign or to tamper with a road sign or barrier.
Police are investigating several incidents where the boom gates were illegally opened on recent weekends.
