Witnesses say the young man’s Holden Astra may have swerved to the wrong side of the road before colliding with the truck.
Police, paramedics and other emergency services personnel who attended the scene described the incident as horrific and tragic, with the car smashed beyond recognition.
It is understood the young man died instantly, while the truck driver was trapped in his vehicle with serious injuries.
Police and emergency services worked to free the truck driver and he was taken to Wellington Hospital before being airlifted to Orange hospital with head, and leg injuries and other internal injuries.
The head-on smash happened on an uphill section of the Mitchell Highway about 15 kilometres west of Wellington.
The highway was blocked for several hours after the accident and traffic diverted.
It was re-opened early on Saturday morning.
A police spokesperson said officers from the Orana Local Area Command were investigating the cause of the crash and their inquiries were ongoing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
