ORANGE Confederates’ challenge this season has not been to get the lead but to hold it as they rue their missed opportunities in the women’s Premier League Hockey competition.

Despite sitting on the bottom of the table with only one win and a draw, ‘Feds have been much improved in recent times.

‘Feds captain Sam Stevenson believes they were unlucky in their loss to cross-town rivals Ex-Services last weekend.

“We could have capitalised on our chances up front but I thought our defence was a real positive. They (Ex-Services) scored two really good goals,” Stevenson said.

The job doesn’t get any easier on Saturday against third-place Parkes United, who won the corresponding fixture 5-nil earlier this season.

“We do have the home ground advantage, we do have a young team who are not used to holding a lead,” Stevenson said.

‘Feds have showed a lot of promise this season but have been run down towards the end of their matches and Stevenson believes her inexperienced side gets flustered and loses its way .

“The challenge for us is to get ahead and then stay ahead, we have been winning and getting rundown,” she said.

Stevenson hopes to build on this year and have a strong off-season to become a more refined team next year.

“We are hoping the nucleus of the team stays together. We will have a much bigger off-season and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Mark (Pengilly),” she said.

Stevenson has big wraps coach Mark Pengilly, who she believes will bring positive results to the club.

“We have really improved under Mark, we all enjoy his mentoring and he definitely has a positive effect on the team,” she said.

Confederates play Parkes United at the Orange Hockey Centre on Saturday at 1.10pm.
