Of the 128 people who voted as part of the online poll, 44.5 per cent elected a public reserve as the best place for the Akubra-style pergola, while 55.5 per cent said private land was more appropriate.
Midstate Metals staff were due to complete the 3.6-metre by 4.4-metre structure this week - after working on the idea for several years, councillor Chris Gryllis has funded its construction himself, but it does not yet have a home.
Of the several readers who commented on Wednesday’s story, “Not the hat again” said Cr Gryllis needed to “cop it sweet” and recognise the proposal did not have public support, while Annoying Apple called it a “millinery monstrosity”.
