The 51-year-old man told police he consumed six stubbies of Extra Dry between 10pm on Tuesday March 11 and 3am on Wednesday March 12.
He drove his son to work at 6.30am when police saw him do an illegal U-turn.
Officers pulled his car over and he recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.120, more twice the legal limit.
His solicitor Rebecca McIlveen said her client had held a licence since he was 17 and had only minor traffic offences on his record.
She said he could not resume employment until he had his licence back.
In Orange Local Court on Thursday June 12, the magistrate, Terry Lucas, said he must have known he was over the limit when he chose to drive.
He fined the Franklin Road resident $1200 and suspended his licence for six months.
