In a whirlwind 48 hours, he was approached by the Titans to take up an immediate position in their halves.

“It’s come out of nowhere. The last 48 hours have been hectic,” Mortimer said.

The 25-year-old decided to take up the offer and flew to the Gold Coast last night to join his new teammates.

“I’m very sad to go (from the Roosters) but at this stage in my career I need to take this opportunity,” Mortimer explained.

“They’ve had a few injuries up there and require a half which is where I really long to play.”

Mortimer has been given an immediate release from the Sydney Roosters, who he won last year’s NRL premiership with, and has signed with the Titans until the end of the 2016 season.

Titans coach John Cartright yesterday said there was a chance Mortimer could play for the Gold Coast in their round 15 clash against St George Illawarra this Sunday.

“He’s healthy, he played on the weekend, so he’ll come into consideration for selection pretty much straight away,” Cartright said.

The Titans are currently without halfback Beau Henry (knee) and five-eighth Aidan Sezer (pectoral muscle).

Half Albert Kelly is in doubt for Sunday’s match, meaning Mortimer could make his debut this weekend.

“I’m available for the Titans (this weekend) if they want me,” Mortimer said.

“It’ll be weird. I won’t expect to know all the players and have all the combinations set right away, but I’ve got to do it pretty quickly.”

Cartright said Mortimer would be a welcome addition to the Titans squad.

“He’s 25 and he’s played in two grand final teams and very few players can put that on their resume,” the coach said.

“I find him a really naturally gifted footballer. Anyone who can play in the halves and at hooker at that level and do what he’s done, obviously has talent. He’s a great support player, very instinctive. 

“He comes to us with a reputation off the field of being a quality fella as well.”

While excited at his move, Mortimer admitted he found it tough to tell his Roosters teammates the news at training yesterday.

“It was one of the hardest things I’ve done this morning telling the boys and saying goodbye. They were all very supportive,” Mortimer said.

“I’m glad I can leave on such good terms with the Roosters.”

Roosters coach Trent Robinson offered his support to Mortimer yesterday.

“Daniel typifies the type of player we’ve been trying to build our team around, and while it’s sad to see him go, I’m excited to see him pursue a more regular opportunity in the halves,” Robinson said.

The Roosters will host the Titans in round 22 and Mortimer’s former teammates have already assured him he’ll get special attention.

“We play them in round 22 and the boys have promised to run a lot of traffic at me,” Mortimer laughed.

Mortimer, who joined the Roosters from Parramatta, has played 91 NRL matches since debuting in 2009.
