In Kylie Jordan’s first game as CYMS’ top grade mentor the green and golds won out over a spirited Kinross 1sts unit in their Orange Toyota Cup clash on Saturday.
CYMS produced a clinical final quarter performance to put any hopes of a Kinross resurgence to bed, winning 56-35, without key defender Brigette Jasprizza.
“It showed our depth a bit I think,” CYMS Netball Club president Bernadette Bird said.
“Brigette is a phenomenal defender, but our second division players know what they’re doing and we filled the void well.”
Leading from start to finish, CYMS led 16-12 at quarter-time before extending their lead to 11 in the second period, going into the half-time break 31-20 in front.
CYMS’ lead was still 11 at three-quarter time before centre Emily Brisbane and wing attack Annie Miller dominated the final quarter, regularly combining to give shooters Tara Nagle and Beth Curtin good position inside the circle as CYMS piled on 15 goals to five, securing the 21-goal win.
Bird lauded the work of all the players, particularly Brisbane and Miller.
“They all played very consistently and didn’t lose their heads,” Bird said.
“We play a quick brand of netball, and it worked well for us on Saturday. Emily was fantastic in the middle, and she combined brilliantly with Annie who fed the circle incredibly.”
The win moves CYMS into fifth on the Toyota Cup table and Bird said finals netball is now a realistic goal.
“The win gives us something to build from,” she said.
“The girls definitely want to feature in the finals series, but we have to get their first.”
In Saturday’s other Toyota Cup matches Life Studio DVM Embroidery defeated Hawks Ace Drilling 46-27, while Robin Hood Orange Glass toppled High A 62-42.
Life Studio’s clash with Royal Hawks was deferred until Thursday night, at 6.15pm.
