Boris was one of several clowns in Orange and he was last seen standing sentry in Gardiner Road where he was strategically placed to advertise the upcoming Great Moscow Circus.
Circus general manager Greg Hall said the abduction was not a publicity stunt and the clowns had been stolen previously.
"One showed up two weeks later with a note complaining about his working conditions," Mr Hall said.
The joke was funny but it cost Mr Hall $1,000 to transport the giant clown from where the jokers left him, he said.
"Usually it's people skylarking and we hope it is this time because they are very expensive.
"Boris is one of the older ones we have."
The clown was stolen at around 1am on Saturday from its residence in Gardiner Road.
Boris would be extremely heavy and he would have been deflated for the kidnapping to occur so whoever stole him had help, and had a "pretty big car", Mr Hall said.
Each clown had cost thousands of dollars and Mr Hall offered a $500 reward for any person who had information which led the safe return of Boris.
"Boris is valuable and we don't want to have to get a new one," he said.
"We just want him to come home."
A police spokesperson confirmed a report of the stolen clown had been made and she said detectives would investigate.
Any one with information is urged to contact Orange police 63636399.
