The former Orange Emus coach will mentor the Brumbies Provincial representative squad when they take on the Australian Police team in July.

Turnbull earned the right to mentor the representative team after he coached the Southern Inland Rugby Union side to the Brumbies Provincial Championship on the June long weekend.

The understated Turnbull was pleased his side claimed the title.

“I was happy with that outcome,” he said.

The Rams were strong during the three-day event at Jindabyne.

On Saturday they took on South Australia and were leading 29-12 at the break.

South Australia, who were invited to play in the tournament, came back in the second half and reduced the margin to 29-26 before two late converted tries gave the Rams a 43-26 victory.

On Sunday, the SIRU side ran riot over South Coast, scoring 17 tries and kicking 15 conversions to win 115-0.

The Rams delivered their best performance in their win over Monaro on Monday.

They were up 28-13 at half-time and were able to hold off Monaro and win 41-32.

Turnbull said he had been unsure how the Rams would perform at the Championships, but he was impressed with the way they played.

“I didn’t know how they would go because there were only five players in the side from last year’s team. We were going in quite blind,” he explained.

“It was a very balanced team. Our forwards did well against Monaro and that’s where we won the game.”

The SIRU side had 13 players selected in the Brumbies Provincial squad following the win.

The representative team will line up against the Australian Police on July 11 in Canberra in a curtain-raiser to the Super Rugby match between the Brumbies and the Western Force.

Turnbull said the team will get together in Canberra the night before the match, and have a light training run the morning of the game.

The coach said he had a simple goal for the representative fixture.

“Just to try and be very competitive against the national team,” he said.
