Since it began in 1998, the “smorgasbord of music” has been a stalwart of the live music scene in Orange, giving new and experienced musicians of all genres a place to share their original music with an enthusiastic audience every month.
Sixteen years ago founder Jon Carter was working as the Victoria Hotel’s booking agent when he noticed many Orange musicians were missing out on playing pub gigs because they did not have the performance practice or ready material they needed.
“I realised I knew a lot of people around Orange who wanted to play a gig, but couldn’t play a whole four hour set, because that was the only way you could play at a pub back then,” he said.
“So I came up with this format.”
The first 4loor in May 1998 featured four acts who shared the time slot, bringing musical talent out of the bedrooms and garages of Orange. Mr Carter said the hotel hasn’t looked back since.
“This format of having four acts on the night has proven to be quite popular. The Vic has always supported live music and 4 on the 4loor has become part of the music fabric in Orange,” he said.
The show, which would not have gone ahead without the support of Lander’s Music and its public address system, has seen hundreds of musical acts play on its stage, like Adrian ‘Ado’ Hadson, who will make his 50th appearance tonight, his young guitar students The Basfords, a trio of talented young brothers who have played once before, and Steven Holmes, who will brave the stage for the first time.
Some of the original 4loor acts will return, including Rob Carroll, Amber, Bec and Steve Rutherford.
Steven Holmes will kick off the special edition of the show at 8.30pm with his blend of acoustic punk. Mr Carter said he hoped all Orange music lovers would come along to support the seven acts.
