Played at Endeavour Oval, Kinross ran in four tries to three to claim this year’s title and progress through to the NSW Primary School Sevens State Finals in Sydney, set to be contested at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday, June 21.
The state finals pitting the best under 12 players in the state against each other will serve as the curtain raiser for the Wallabies and France Test match later that night.
Australian Rugby Union participation manager Mark DeBrincat said the thrilling final was a cracking way to end the western region leg of the tournament.
“I was talking to a few people after the final and everyone was really impressed with the catch-pass skills of the kids. The improvement each year is notable,” DeBrincat said.
“It was a great day. The skill level was outstanding.”
A vast array of central west centres were represented at Endeavour Oval yesterday, with Assumption Primary School Bathurst, Holy Family Primary School Bathurst, St Raphael’s Cowra, St Brigid’s Coonamble, Catherine McAuley Orange, St Matthew’s Mudgee, Dubbo South Primary School, St Mary’s Dubbo, St Laurence’s Forbes and Parkes Primary School the non-final playing schools on show.
Kinross edged past St Rapheal’s in their semi-final while St Augustine’s defeated Parkes Public to make it into the final.
As a result of yesterday’s win, Kinross will be presented with the first Peter Nugent Shield after NSW Rugby recently named this competition in honour of the current principal of Assumption Primary School in Bathurst.
