After just four years at the club, White has been appointed the Tigers’ club captain for season 2014-15.
An integral position in one of Sydney’s most respected cricket clubs, White takes over from Matthew Grice and will act as a link between the club’s players and board.
For someone so young, White is just 25, the appointment is an unprecedented honour.
“It’s massive to even be asked,” White said.
“It was mentioned to me last year, but I still wasn’t expecting it at all. It’s like my coach Kevin Chevall always tells me though, ‘if you work hard you will get rewards you never expect’.
“I also see it as a massive opportunity to give back to the Tigers, they have bent their backs for me and given me a place to call home.”
White is currently plying his trade for Marehay Cricket Club in England’s Derbyshire Premier League and is expected to slot into the Tigers’ first grade team, where he played the entire 2013-14 season, when he returns.
The tearaway has outlined his goals for the club for season 2014-15, and is thinking big.
“I’ll be focusing on all areas of our club,” White explained.
“I want to work with the men, the women and the SCG XI to build the club, and continue as one of the top clubs in the Sydney competition.
“I also want to help the club and players become better for themselves and the game and be a leader that players can come and get help from, as a player or a person.
“Most importantly I guess, is work towards winning the club championship, and get some premiership flags flying again at Tigerland. It will be a steep learning curve, but I can’t wait to get home and rip in.”
SCC general manager David Kelly said White is a perfect fit for the role, and was identified by the board some time ago.
“We have a very high opinion of Matty,” Kelly explained.
“He is a wonderful young man, which is a credit to his parents and family. The position is internally appointed, so we don’t seek applications. The board appoint a player who they think is worthy of the position.
“The board has been grooming him for this position, they identified him as a candidate because of his work ethic and his great personal skills.”
