Watsons Bay has been drowned in Orange plonk for the past three weeks as part of the Taste Orange at Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel event, which will continue until the end of May as a celebration of Aussie Wine Month.
While the Watsons Bay wine list will feature only Orange wines for the entirety of May, the month long celebration is not just showing off the city’s wine. Patrons will also be allowed to immerse themselves in all things Orange including produce, and even a taste of polo.
Taste Orange executive officer Rhonda Sear said the Watsons Bay extravaganza has so far gone off without a hitch, and Sunday’s inaugural Taste Orange Food and Wine Festival, the main feature of the event, is set to be a hit.
“The Orange winemakers have been so well supported, that we have extended our reach throughout Sydney,” she said. “We’re very excited about the partnership, it’s the first time we’ve held an event in the eastern Suburbs in three years, and it has really opened the area up to us.
“This is an exciting time for the Orange region. The region’s wines and produce are gaining due recognition and there is no better place to present them than at one of Sydney’s iconic venues, overlooking the harbour [on Sunday]. It is a beautiful contrast from the cool slopes of our Mount Canobolas to the Sydney’s harbourside.”
So far this month there has also been pop-up cellar doors every weekend at Watsons Bay, showcasing a different winery each time. These smaller events included wine tastings and culinary education forums.
Last week the hotel also hosted a wine masterclass where the hotel’s head sommelier imparted guests with expert knowledge on the cool climate wines of the Orange region. Another masterclass is scheduled for May 29, beginning at 6.30pm.
Set among the lush surrounds of Robertson Park and boasting panoramic harbour views, Sunday’s festival will go from 11am to 4pm and feature stalls with mouth-watering local produce, and wines.
