The program is a key initiative of the State Library of NSW, NSW Ageing Strategy and the Telstra Digital Inclusion Strategy, and is set to teach the city’s older generation how to use the internet, email, social media, online banking and also provides an introduction to smartphones and tablets.
Tech Savvy Seniors will cater for beginners, who are not sure of what the internet can offer them, up to the more invested, who are familiar with computers and the online world but could afford to continue learning.
“Everyone can benefit from being online and connected no matter where they live, how old they are or where their interests lie,” Central West Libraries projects officer Monica Engel said.
“The Tech Savvy Seniors learning packages are designed to support you with the information you need to get online and learn at your own pace.”
The program will run all through June, with several classes on offer including an introduction to the internet and an introduction to email.
The first week of Tech Savvy Seniors coincides with the national Stay Smart Online Week, formerly the National Cyber Security Awareness Week, and as such, the classes will also teach students safe online practices.
“Having seniors learn about the dangers of internet scams is important, you see so many people being taken for a ride these days,” Central West Libraries technical services librarian Ros Dorsman said.
“We want to teach people about the dangers so they don’t have to worry about being scammed.”
Bookings are essential and class sizes are small. Please contact Monica at Orange City Library to secure your place.
