The national program, first established in the United Kingdom by chef Jamie Oliver, promotes healthy eating and living in a fun and exciting way, and Bowen students were encouraged to dance for 15 minutes before creating healthy salad wraps.

Woolworths supplied the school with lunch ingredients for every child, including a piece of fruit and bottle of water, and North Orange Woolworths store manager Tony Downing said it was good to see the students excited about healthy eating.

“It is all about getting kids into healthy food, changing the culture and changing the mindsets in the community,” Mr Downing said. 

“Kids are really able to relate to the fun of food through this program.”

The North Orange supermarket has had a partnership with Bowen Public School for over a year, and provides students with fresh fruit every Wednesday, bread and cereals for breakfasts, stationery and puts on other activities.

Mr Downing said the partnership began when student welfare worker Tammie Meachan approached the store and pitched the idea.

“It’s not always about sales, sometimes its just the right thing to do. It’s about building partnerships in the community and adding value to the school’s curriculum,” he said.
