The FOWP are lobbying for Orange City Council (OCC) to prioritise upgrading Wade Park over building a multiple field complex, the latter of which is all but confirmed after it was revealed OCC passed a resolution to purchase land for the project.
Sullivan said while his involvement in FOWP may surprise some - a new complex would provide Orange CYMS a state-of-the-art facility - he based his decision on the betterment of the entire Orange sporting community.
“We have the facility there at Wade Park,” Sullivan said
“If we aren’t going to get a rectangular field, upgrade Wade Park, or do it in the meantime. There is history, and potential.
“It’s not about making anyone angry, or blocking any sports. It’s about playing as much sport, and attracting as much sport to town as possible.
“From a purely rugby league point of view I’d love to see a rectangular field built, but we’ve already fallen behind Mudgee, Bathurst and Dubbo and I think doing what they’ve done is going to be reactive, rather than proactive.
“A lot of the necessary infrastructure is at Wade Park already. If there is room for both, do both, but something needs to be done sooner rather than later.”
