Ms Burgess, who has been in the industry for 30 years, currently works as a rehabilitation nurse in Orange’s coronary care unit in the catheter laboratory.
She was voted number one by a panel of senior nurses who cover the region, which stretches south to the Victorian border, north to the Queensland border and west to the South Australian border and east to Bathurst.
Ms Burgess was shocked with her success in the award, which was named in conjunction with International Nurses Day yesterday.
“This is such a lovely surprise,” she said.
“But I’m part of a unit where everyone has an important support role to play. Our aim and goal is to get our patients through their treatment safe and well.”
Manager of nursing and midwifery services for the WLHD Meegan Conners paid tribute to Maryanne’s work.
She was joined by director of nursing and midwifery for the WLHD Adrian Fahy in declaring International Nurses Day a great chance to say thank you to the nurses in Orange and throughout the region.
“Nursing is a truly compelling career, which is challenging and demanding but also highly rewarding,” he said.
“The WLHD warmly congratulates Maryanne Burgess. It was difficult to choose from so many outstanding nominations, which demonstrates the highly skilled staff we have working in our health district.”
