HUNDREDS of Orange schoolchildren will simultaneously crunch down on an apple on Friday morning to herald the start of the three-day Orange Apple Festival.

Festival co-ordinator Cath Thompson says the event is the result of great teamwork from the schools, teachers and orchardists.
Ahead of the start of the festival students from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School on Thursday toured the orchard of Max Davidson, who has been growing apples for decades.
The Year 1 children were all given an apple to enjoy on the bus trip back in to Orange.
“Today I gave them Mutsu apples, which are a Japanese variety,” he said.
“When they’re fully ripe they go a cream colour from the bright green and are much sweeter than Granny Smiths.”
Teacher Erin Smith said the children were encourage to eat healthy food every day of the week.
“We encourage children to bring in some fruit or vegetables to crunch on before they start their learning for the day,” she said.
The district school’s will also celebrate the Orange Apple Festival with a dress up and art day, and visits from growers to schools.
On Saturday the Orange Farmers Market, to be held at the North Court, will have an apple theme with cooking demonstrations, apple bobbing, an apple art exhibition and apple cider tasting.
