While Orange mayor John Davis was careful not to be drawn into a negative discussion about how the new development would address some of the problems encountered in North Orange, it is clear council staff and councillors themselves are determined to learn from past mistakes.
Council staff have even gone so far as to declare they are embarking on a new approach to planning housing areas.
This time council has pledged to not only have input from urban planners, but to ask landholders and the wider community what they expect from the new development.
In fact, the recent information and feedback session council held with nearby residents was apparently fruitful for all concerned.
At the launch of the Shiralee Village Masterplan on Thursday, Cr Davis promised there would be ground rules in place to ensure the new residential development maintained its own distinct personality, incorporating the best attributes of city life in a regional area.
Cr Davis said the introduction of a village centre to the plans was intended to give the area a look and feel that was similar to what was found in some of the villages in the Blue Mountains.
All Orange residents are invited to have their say on this development when a draft plan goes on public exhibition for 28 days after the council meeting on May 6.
