The band’s 30 members will dress up in Star Wars costumes and perform music from the movie franchise to celebrate International Star Wars Day on May 4.
Performances by the band are held on the first Sunday of every month during the warmer seasons at Cook Park’s rotunda, but the band will take a break over winter.
“We wanted to end the season with something a little different,”band conductor Matthew Gateley said.
“We won’t begin our outdoor performances again until about October.”
Mr Gateley said it was a coincidence the last recital fell on May 4, but said everyone in the band was right behind the idea.
“It won’t be on a Sunday for another 11 years or so, so this is our last chance to do this,” Mr Gateley said.
“The whole band has been very excited about the day.”
Alongside the brass band’s regular repertoire, some of the famous tunes from Star Wars will be played, which Mr Gateley said were sounding quite good.
“We’ve been practicing the Star Wars music for about a month,” he said.
“We’ll keep them in our repertoire for future performances.”
The band is asking everyone who comes along to the performance to get involved in the fun.
“”We want everyone who comes along to dress up too,” Mr Gateley said.
“There will be a prize for the best-dressed audience member.”
May the Fourth is celebrated by fans of Star Wars across the globe.
In fact, the whole month of May is a special time for fans, with all six Star Wars movies premiering in May, while George Lucas’ birthday falls on May 14.
