Orange City Council development services director David Waddell said the master plan would feature more than 1500 lots and associated infrastructure.

“We’re very excited, we’ve spent months consulting with residents, councillors and interest groups to try to design a suburb that’s going to complement the beautiful things about Orange,” he said.

“It was important to take the time to do a quality design and create a community, not just a housing subdivision.”

The number of lots was originally estimated at more than 1000, but was raised following more detailed planning.

Sustainable development committee chair and councillor Jeff Whitton said staff had put in an enormous amount of effort.

“It’s probably the best-prepared application and planning proposal for a subdivision that’s ever been done,” he said.

“Should councillors give the go-ahead on the display, that’s the chance for the community to have a look at what’s proposed for south Orange.

“The south Orange precinct will be very in tune with the very old part of the city, with very wide streets.”

Cr Whitton said a variety of lot sizes would be included to cater for families through to young couples and senior residents, and even rural living.

Shopping facility provisions have also been made.

“Really, it’s Canberra-style without the circles, we’ve kept it in grid fashion,” Cr Whitton said.

“We’ve catered for everything you would need in the area you live in order to enjoy life.”

The remaining details will remain confidential until the council’s committee meeting agenda is released next week.

The proposed suburb is bounded by the railway line to the north, Hawke Lane to the south, Pinnacle Road to the west and the Rifle Range to the east.

Following public exhibition of the master plan, including lot sizes, development controls, the Section 94 developer contributions plan and staging, council staff will consider submissions and make the required changes.

The council will then vote on whether to put the proposal to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure for gazettal.
