The first store was opened on April 9, 1914 in Victoria by GJ Coles and his brother James, the first variety store in Australia.
The supermarket chain has grown from six employees when it began to 100, 000 staff members nationwide today.
“It’s good to be celebrating 100 years. The team are right into it,” store manager Mark Kinsela said.
Enthusiastic staff embraced the centenary theme, with some dressing up in 1900s clothes while others donned party hats and commemorative shirts.
A large white cake featuring the red Coles logo was made especially for the day.
A lunch and dinner at the supermarket is also planned for the team as part of the celebrations.
The Orange store recently went through a major remodel and expansion in the Orange Central shopping centre.
Since renovations began Mr Kinsela said he had noticed a change within the store.
“It has a lot better atmosphere. I am looking forward to the official launch after Easter,” he said.
